One of  TMS’s more interesting projects in 2011 was the revitalization of an old automobile dealership into a state-of-the-art, near net-zero energy office, retail and restaurant building now known as Regeneration Park.  We  recently showed you photographs of the steak house, Demeters, and will now move you upstairs to the office spaces.  Many of the…Read More

Good Things In Small Packages

TMS Architects often works on a large scale – large houses, hotels, restaurants, banks and offices  – but some of our most memorable work can be found in the smaller, more intimate spaces in our projects.  A small space calls for a creative solution with ‘jewel box’ results.

The owners’ love of New Hampshire’s rugged lake fronts and mountainous terrain was the inspiration for this stately shingle-style lakefront residence. Substantial in size and scale as befitting its 70+ acre site on the shoreline of New Hampshire’s largest inland waterway, Lake Winnipesaukee, the residence was designed to blend in with its surroundings.
The exterior colors were chosen to blend into the earth tones of the site’s natural hues. The end result is such that looking from the lake back to the home, one can only catch glimpses of the house nestled among the pine trees in a harmonious relationship with nature’s color palette.

“Scaling the high bluffs, overlooking the sandy beach and Atlantic Ocean, the home’s design takes advantage of the ocean views from every main living space, yet provides the homeowners with privacy to relax and enjoy the ocean breezes. The sweeping stone foundation and dramatic gambrel rooflines differentiates the residence from its surroundings.
The homeowners wanted to be able to take advantage of the dramatic ocean views from every room; an open floor plan and minimal separation between the casually designed interior accomplished this objective. The home’s interior is enhanced with a careful attention to detail as demonstrated by the bold ceilings and textured walls that extend deep into the interior of the house.

“With only 13 miles of New Hampshire coastline, TMS designed this home to take advantage of the panoramic views of the Wentworth Golf Course and Marina, Witches Creek and a classic view of the New Castle Lighthouse. This seaside home evokes the turn-of-the-century shingle style residence so synonymous with New England’s rugged coastline. The home is visually anchored to its surrounding landscape by a fieldstone foundation and stonewalls enveloping intimately landscape courtyards and outdoor living spaces.

Our firm was asked to design a year-round seaside home for a client in York, Maine. The site, an elevated rocky ledge overlooking the ocean and the Nubble Lighthouse, presented numerous challenges and needed extensive preparation. The design resulted in a floor plan consisting of three levels plus a sub-basement. Virtually every living space has a view of the ocean and capture breathtaking views of the lighthouse. The family’s concept called for a home which would consist of five bedrooms, spaces for formal entertaining, a large centralized kitchen, and multiple casual areas for entertaining. An elevator, a wine cellar and multiple utility spaces were also included in the final plans.
