The Portsmouth Historical Society, working with TMS Architects, has successfully converted the former city library into the Discover Portsmouth Center, an informative “central gateway” to the historical, cultural and artistic events of the city as well as space capable of hosting various exhibits. It is fitting, considering Portsmouth’s seafaring history, that one of the upcoming major events to be held in the center will be a gala preview and publication party on June 2nd for Maritime Portsmouth: The Sawtelle Collection.
This gala evening, a benefit for the Portsmouth Historical Society, and produced in collaboration with the Portsmouth Athenaeum, will preview a collection of nearly 200 paintings and artifacts gathered by Joe and Jean Sawtelle over a period of twenty years and never before exhibited publicly. Along with the exhibit will be a beautifully illustrated 216 page exhibit catalogue prepared in partnership with the Portsmouth Marine Society. The exhibit will run from June 3-August 31, 2011 and details of the gala and the exhibit can be obtained by contacting www.portsmouthhistory.org
