The Public Has Spoken!

As you know, TMS Architects has been following the AIA Architect Dream House competition and received word, via Shelterpop.com that a winner had been announced!  The contest had been winnowed down to five finalists which were then put up to a public vote.  The public spoke and the winners were Ting Li, Associate AIA LEED AP and Maja Parkler, Associate AIA.

Their winning design features entertaining space and a chef’s open kitchen on the first floor, along with an office/library/meeting space.  The second floor contains a terrace, while the third and fourth floors house Barbie’s private enclave (her bedroom and inspiration room, respectively).  There is plenty of garden spaces, with a green house on the roof and a landscaped garden for her pets.  Design elements include solar panels, operable shading devices, bamboo flooring, low flow toilet and sink features and locally sourced and manufactured materials and furnishings.

The architects’ winning submission will not actually be produced by Mattel but the company will donate $1000  in the architects’ names to CHAD, a charter high school in Philadelphia focused on architecture and design.  Both of the winning architects graduated from Harvard Graduate School of Design’s MArch program and are working in New York City while pursuing their architectural licenses.  Read the full interview with the architects in shelterpop.com.
