Hiring an architect is the highest level of service you can receive for a residential construction project. And, working with an architect is the best solution for the busy homeowner who doesn’t have the time to oversee a full-scale project day-in and day-out.

Just like you wouldn’t trust just anyone with your car, you should never hire a residential architect you aren’t 100 percent confident will meet and exceed your needs and expectations. After all, it’s your home; it’s your most valuable asset! Whether it’s a small-scale remodel or a whole-home renovation, there are several factors to consider before bringing an architect into the picture.

Recommendations and referrals are always a great place to start when looking for the right architect for your home project. You can also take advantage of resources such as the American Institute of Architects (AIA), as well as your local chamber of commerce. Once you’ve found a few potential architecture firms, your next step should be  to make sure they are staying up to date with all state and local codes and standards, as well as continued education requirements, by double-checking their AIA membership. Another great way to check a firm’s background is to contact your local Better Business Bureau office.

To narrow down your list, check each firm’s level of expertise and past projects. Make sure the firm is well-versed in your desired type of architecture and interior design style. Thoroughly review their references, track record of approvals, and see if you’re able to gauge how well they work with local planners and contractors. During this process, you should be looking for how the firm reacted and worked amid changes, challenges and tight budgets.

Finally, schedule in-person interviews with each architect, so you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions and make sure you’re able to connect and communicate effectively. This is also a great time to determine if you’ll be able to form a positive, productive working relationship with the architect(s).
