F or this multigenerational lakefront retreat, the design intent centered on creating a home that could comfortably host extended family gatherings of up to 50 guests while maintaining a relaxed and sophisticated atmosphere. The 11-bedroom residence was crafted to
complement the clients’ existing 1990s home nearby, while evolving its interior aesthetic in a more tailored and modernized direction.
The interiors were driven by a desire for elegant flexibility. Each bedroom (except for the primary suite) was designed to accommodate various bed configurations, from single kings to bunk rooms, ensuring the home could easily adapt to changing family needs over time. This meant forgoing a traditional bed wall in favor of more versatile layouts, with thoughtful lighting and built-ins supporting every possible arrangement.
Materiality and acoustics played a major role in the home’s design. A custom flooring system with sound-mitigating mats and carpet throughout the second floor helped soften the impact of daily activity and all of those little feet running throughout the home.
Additional soundproofing was integrated between shared bedroom and bathroom walls, prioritizing peace and quiet for large group stays.
The home’s furnishings embody a feeling of casual-luxury: soft yet durable fabrics, generous seating arrangements, and subtle lakefront references throughout. Spaces like the theater, game room, and TV den lean more playful, while the dining areas, including both the indoor and screen porch setup, were scaled to accommodate up to 18 guests comfortably. The result is a consistent blend of formal entertaining and easy lakeside living.
In collaboration with the clients, we incorporated personal touches like Western-inspired textile accents, lake-themed decor, and custom artwork and styling. These layers were curated carefully, ensuring the home felt both personal and cohesive.
Details such as a circular stair with a nightlight newel post brought a sense of craftsmanship and character throughout.
